Granting Citizenship to Sri Lankans of Chinese Origin

    1.     Grant of citizenship to persons of Chinese origin Act No 38 of 2008 has been enacted by the
            parliament of Srilanka, with effect from 31.10.2008

    2.     Persons of Chinese origin, living in Srilanka, since 1948.11.15 or their descendants, who have
            not been granted with Srilanka citizenship under any of the previously enacted citizenship Laws,
            are entitled to apply for Srilankan citizenship under the provisions of section 2 of this Act; which
            is quoted below.

            Section 2. of the Act

                         “2. Any person of Chinese origin,who
                         (a) has been a permanent resident of Srilanka since November 15 1948;
                         (b) is a descendent, presently resident in Srilanka, of a person who has been a
                              permanent resident of Srilanka since November15,1948.
                              Shall be entitled to apply in terms of the provisions of this Act, for the grant of the
                              status of a citizen of Srilanka”

    3.    This Act shall be in force for a period of five years form the date of enactment.
           Therefore, all the eligible persons are kindly informed to apply for Srilankan citizenship right now.
