General information on Travel Documents

Eligibility
Sri Lankans by Descent or by Registration. (Except for No 5 below)

Types of Travel Documents
1. Types of Travel Documents
    - Diplomatic Passports,
    - Official Passports and
    - Ordinary Passports valid for All Countries
2. Ordinary Passports valid for Specified Countries including Middle East.
3. Emergency Certificates valid for India and Nepal.
4. Emergency Certificates [Saudi Arabia] valid for Haj and Umrah pilgrimage only.

5. Identity Certificates valid for All Countries issued to a person living in Sri Lanka, whose Nationality is not established.
6. Non Machine Readable Passports are issued by Sri Lanka Missions abroad under special circumstances.

Note: All these documents are issued according to the specifications of the I.C.A.O. with machine readable zone, except No 6 above.

If Travel Document is lost
A complaint should be made at the nearest Police Station and with a certified copy of the entry the matter has to be informed to the issuing authority. This document is required when applying for a new Travel Document in place of a lost one.
If passport is lost abroad, either the outpass or NMRP should be obtained and produced at the time of applying a new Travel Document.

Important
Following are punishable offences. If found guilty upon prosecution imprisonment from 6 months to 5 years and a fine of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 200,000 can be imposed.
- Submission of falsified or forged document/s to obtain a Travel Document.
- Applying for a Travel Document while in possession of such a document and / or possession of more
  than one valid Travel Document at a time.
- Despatch of a Sri Lanka Travel Document through the post, courier or another person from / to Sri Lanka
  without the prior approval of the Controller. For approval written request [in duplicate], Courier letter [in
  duplicate] and the Passport should be forwarded to the 3^rd floor #41 Ananda Rajakaruna Mw
  Colombo 10 Sri Lanka.
