01. Implementation of the facility to obtain an appointment through the Online Appointment System for Applicants Obtaining Passports through the Regional Offices of the Department of Immigration and Emigration

A methodology for obtaining an appointment through Online Appointment System for applicants visiting all the Regional Offices of the Department of Immigration and Emigration to obtain passports under the One-Day Service and Normal Service has been implemented with effect from 29 October 2026.

Special Instructions for Applicants

1. All applicants visiting any of the above Regional Offices to obtain passports under the One-Day Service or Normal Service are required to obtain an appointment convenient for them through the Online Appointment System before visiting the relevant Regional Office.

2. Applicants visiting the Head Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at “Suhurupaya”, Battaramulla to obtain services are not required to make a prior appointment, and applications are accepted from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on working days.

02. Submission of Passport Applications Online by Persons Who Have Previously Obtained a Passport

With effect from 29 October 2026, the facility to submit passport applications through the online system of the Department of Immigration and Emigration will be provided only to applicants who have previously obtained a passport.

The online system will operate under two service categories: Urgent Service and Normal Service.

• Urgent Service: Applicants applying under the Urgent Service will be given an opportunity to provide their fingerprints within two days after payment of the relevant fee. Following the submission of fingerprints, the passport will be dispatched to the address provided by the applicant within 03 days, through the SL Post Courier Service (Speed Post).

• Normal Service: Applicants applying under the Normal Service will be given an opportunity to provide their fingerprints within 02 days after payment of the relevant fee. Following the submission of fingerprints, the passport will be dispatched to the address provided by the applicant within 14 to 21 days, through registered post.

How to Submit an Application:

Facilities have been provided for applicants to submit their applications by visiting the official website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at  “Apply Passport Online” link.

First-time passport applicants are not eligible to use the online system. Instead, they must visit the Head Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla or one of the regional offices in Kandy, Jaffna, Kurunegala, Vavuniya, and Matara to submit their applications.
